PM Modi Unveils Ambitious Plan for Worlds Largest Grain Storage Scheme
In a groundbreaking move for India’s agricultural sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the world’s largest grain storage scheme in the cooperative sector. The ambitious plan aims to create a storage capacity of 700 lakh tonnes over the next five years, with a staggering investment of ₹1.25 lakh crore.
Inauguration of 11 Godowns Marks the Beginning
Over the weekend, PM Modi inaugurated 11 godowns established by 11 primary agricultural credit societies (PACS) across 11 states. This kickstarts the implementation of the comprehensive scheme, which includes the construction of thousands of warehouses and godowns throughout the country. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the longstanding issue of insufficient storage infrastructure, attributing past challenges faced by farmers to this negligence.
Empowering Farmers and Strengthening Cooperatives
Underlining the significance of the initiative, Modi highlighted that farmers would now have the ability to store their produce in these newly established facilities. This, in turn, enables them to obtain institutional credit against stored goods and sell their products at favorable market prices. The Prime Minister urged cooperative organizations to play a pivotal role in reducing the nation’s dependence on food imports, suggesting a strategic plan for local production.
Transformative Vision: “Sahakar se Samridhi”
PM Modi shared insights into the government’s decade-long efforts to boost the cooperative sector, aligning with the vision of “Sahakar se Samridhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation). He acknowledged the establishment of a dedicated ministry for cooperatives, emphasizing transparency in the election system within these organizations. Modi also commended the success of farmer producer organizations (FPOs), noting their global recognition and impact on sectors like fishery and animal husbandry.
The Strategic Goals of the World’s Largest Grain Storage Scheme
The overarching goal of the scheme is to create storage capacity for 100% of India’s grain production. It envisions seamless integration of PACS godowns into the food grain supply chain, facilitated by collaborative efforts involving NABARD and led by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC). The scheme leverages existing initiatives like the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and Agriculture Marketing Infrastructure (AMI) to provide subsidies and interest subvention benefits for infrastructure development in participating PACS.
As India embarks on this unprecedented venture, PM Modi’s vision for agricultural transformation stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to the welfare and prosperity of its farming community.
