PM Modi Personally Supervised Release of Navy Veterans Jailed in Qatar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally supervised the efforts to secure the release of eight Navy veterans jailed in Qatar, according to the External Affairs Ministry. Seven of them have returned to Delhi. The veterans, sentenced to death in October last year, were allegedly charged with spying. The capital punishment was commuted in December following diplomatic efforts by India. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra stated that PM Modi’s leadership and the strength of India-Qatar ties were reflected in the successful resolution of the issue. The return is considered a significant diplomatic win for India.

Details of the Return and Diplomatic Efforts

The Navy veterans who returned include Captain Navtej Singh Gill (retired), Captain Saurabh Vasisht (retired), Commander Purnendu Tiwari (retired), Captain Birendra Kumar Verma (retired), Commander Sugunakar Pakala (retired), Commander Sanjeev Gupta (retired), Commander Amit Nagpal (retired), and Sailor Ragesh (retired). They were arrested in Qatar in 2022, working for Dahra Global, and had been in jail since then. The return is attributed to PM Modi’s personal intervention, with their death sentence commuted after PM Modi met Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the COP28 summit.

Veterans Express Gratitude to PM Modi

On landing in Delhi, the Navy veterans expressed gratitude to PM Modi for their safe return. One of them credited the Prime Minister’s personal intervention for making their return possible. They acknowledged waiting for 18 months and expressed deep gratitude to the Indian government for the efforts made. The release of the Navy veterans is seen as a significant diplomatic achievement.
