Pioneering Study Uses Machine Learning to Unravel Impact of Microplastics on Soil
Recent concerns over plastic waste accumulation have highlighted its detrimental effects, not only in oceans but also in soils worldwide, posing significant environmental and health risks. As plastics break down into minuscule particles called microplastics (MPs) in the soil, they modify soil characteristics and potentially infiltrate the human food chain, prompting grave health concerns.
In response to this escalating environmental challenge, Prof Yong Sik Ok, a distinguished scientist, led a team utilizing cutting-edge Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to evaluate and predict the influence of MPs on soil parameters. This innovative study aimed to address the complexities of soil-MP interactions, a crucial step towards comprehensive comprehension and mitigation of their impacts.
The team’s findings, published online on November 5, 2023, in Environmental Pollution, emerged from employing ML algorithms programmed to forecast how MPs influence various soil properties. Their analysis unveiled that distinctive factors of MPs—such as size, shape, type, and dosage—significantly alter soil characteristics. Notably, MP size emerged as a pivotal factor, along with shape, type, and dosage, profoundly affecting the chemical attributes of soils.
Prof Yong elucidated the groundbreaking nature of employing ML in this study, emphasizing its time- and resource-efficient approach to unravel the intricate complexities of MPs in soil systems. He underscored how these innovative ML techniques provide a robust foundation for further research in this crucial domain.
