Pakistan Penalized for Slow Over-rate in ICC World Test Championship Against Australia
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed penalties on Pakistan for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first Test against Australia in Perth.
Pakistan incurred a 10% fine of their match fee and had two ICC World Test Championship points deducted from their tally, as announced by the ICC in an official statement.
Javagal Srinath, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, sanctioned the fine after Pakistan fell short by two overs in meeting the required over-rate target when considering the allotted time allowances.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams face a five percent match fee deduction for each over they fail to bowl within the stipulated timeframe.
Following a significant 360-run defeat in the initial Test match, Pakistan dropped to the No. 2 position on the WTC25 standings. Consequently, their percentage points dipped from 66.67 to 61.11.
As per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing regulations, teams are penalized one point for every incomplete over. Therefore, Pakistan’s World Test Championship points were reduced by two.
Pakistan’s captain Shan Masood admitted to the offence, accepting the recommended penalty.
The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Richard Illingworth, along with third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Donovan Koch.
No formal hearing was required due to Masood’s admission of guilt and acceptance of the prescribed punishment.
