Pakistan Government Considers Ban on PTI, Faces Widespread Criticism
Key Highlights:
- Government seeks to ban Imran Khan’s PTI party and press treason charges.
- Immediate criticism from political parties, civil society, and legal experts.
- Government partially backtracks on decision amid fears of widespread protests.
On July 15, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced the government’s intention to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and to press treason charges against Khan under Article 6 of the Constitution. This decision was met with immediate criticism from various quarters.
Imran Khan condemned the move, labeling it as the “murder of democracy.” He noted that PTI was already restricted from contesting elections, with key leaders imprisoned. Even the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and ally PML-Q questioned the decision. Civil society, including the Human Rights Council of Pakistan, expressed concerns over the violation of fundamental rights.
Zahid Hussain, writing in Dawn, described the government’s move as a sign of desperation, warning it could destabilize the political structure. The next day, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar indicated that no final decision had been made and that consultations were ongoing.
Amid fears of widespread protests, the government might retract its threat to ban PTI but remains committed to challenging the Supreme Court’s ruling on reserved seats. The court had ruled PTI eligible for reserved seats for women and minorities, a decision nullifying the Peshawar High Court’s order and correcting the Election Commission’s interpretation.
Following this verdict, the PML-N filed a review petition. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz criticized the court, urging judges to allow the country to progress. In response, PTI accused the government of mafia-like behavior.
The PPP has supported the review decision, but an editorial in Dawn warned that PML-N’s confrontational stance could lead to a conflict between state branches.
The Shehbaz Sharif government’s decisions in the coming weeks will be closely monitored globally.
