Opposition Demands Swift Action on Jk Assembly Elections
Opposition leaders are calling on the government to hasten the process of conducting assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Hasnain Masoodi, a senior leader of the National Conference and a member of the South Kashmir Parliament, expressed his opinion, emphasizing that the central government should have made a decision regarding the polls without the Supreme Court’s intervention.
Saugata Roy of the TMC echoed similar sentiments, urging that elections in the union territory should precede other significant decisions. Minister of State for Home, Ajay Misra, highlighted that elections for local bodies were successfully conducted in the former state.
Supriya Sule of the NCP demanded a clear timeline from the government regarding the conduct of assembly polls and the restoration of statehood to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, rather than vague responses. Jugal Kishore Sharma of the BJP emphasized the importance of the Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Bill, stating that it would ensure justice for the other backward classes (OBCs) in the union territory.
Chinta Anuradha of the YSRCP welcomed the progressive nature of the legislation, stating that it would streamline the election process for local bodies, including panchayats. When introducing the bill for discussion, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai pointed out that after the abrogation of Article 370, the OBCs in Jammu and Kashmir, previously neglected, are now on the path of development.
