No Citizenship Law in Bengal as Long as I am Alive: Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal CM Asserts Opposition to CAA Implementation in the State
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated her firm stance against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), asserting that she would not allow its implementation in the state during her lifetime. Speaking at a public distribution programme in Uttar Dinajpur district, Banerjee accused the BJP of opportunistically raising the CAA issue ahead of the Lok Sabha polls for political gains. She emphasized that the controversial legislation would not be implemented in West Bengal as long as she is alive.
BJP’s CAA Statements Fuel Concerns
Banerjee’s comments were prompted by Union Minister Shantanu Thakur’s recent statement that the CAA would be rolled out across the country within a week. Thakur’s assertion raised concerns and ignited debates about the potential enforcement of the contentious law. The CAA, enacted in 2019, aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim immigrants from specific countries.
Alert Against Alleged BSF Actions in Border Areas
Expressing alarm over reports of the Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly issuing separate identity cards to residents in border areas, Banerjee cautioned people against accepting such cards, labeling them as potential tools in an “NRC trap.” She urged vigilance among border communities and rallied support against perceived threats from an alliance between the Congress, CPI(M), and BJP in the state.
Call for Solidarity under TMC Banner
Banerjee called for unity among citizens under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) banner to counter what she characterized as a Congress-CPI(M)-BJP nexus in West Bengal. Her remarks followed the TMC’s decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in the state independently.
Banerjee’s resolute stand against the CAA aligns with her consistent opposition to the legislation, reflecting the complex political dynamics and heightened discourse surrounding the controversial law in West Bengal.
