Newlands Pitch Deemed Unsatisfactory by ICC After Shortest-Ever Test Match
The Newlands pitch in Cape Town received an “unsatisfactory” rating from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday, following a low-scoring second Test between India and South Africa. This decision was part of the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, conducted after the conclusion of the shortest-ever completed Test match in Newlands, where a total of 642 balls were bowled.
Mohammed Siraj’s impressive 6/15 led to South Africa being bundled out for 55 in their first innings. India, in turn, secured a 98-run lead with a total of 153, featuring notable contributions from Rohit Sharma (39), Shubman Gill (36), and Virat Kohli (46). Aiden Markram’s counter-attacking hundred in the third innings proved insufficient as India, set a target of 79, emerged victorious by seven wickets on day two, courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah’s six-wicket haul.
ICC Match Referee Chris Broad submitted a report expressing the concerns of match officials, leading to an assessment that resulted in the Newlands pitch being labeled as “unsatisfactory.” Broad noted the challenging conditions for batting, with quick and sometimes unpredictable bounces making shot-playing difficult. Batters were frequently hit on the gloves, and wickets fell due to awkward bounce.
Under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, venues with unsatisfactory pitches and outfields are allocated demerit points. One demerit point is awarded for an unsatisfactory rating, and upon reaching six demerit points, the venue is suspended from hosting international cricket for 12 months. The penalty increases to 24 months if a venue accumulates 12 demerit points. These points remain active for a rolling five-year period. Cricket South Africa has a 14-day window to appeal against the sanction.
