NC Criticizes Azad Allegations on Abdullahs Knowledge of Article 370 Abrogation
The National Conference has strongly condemned former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s recent comments accusing NC Chief Farooq Abdullah and his son, Omar Abdullah, of having prior knowledge of the abrogation of Article 370. The party asserts that Azad has made “baseless and senseless allegations” and has “stooped so low” in his political discourse.
Farooq Abdullah’s Response to Azad’s Allegations
Farooq Abdullah, the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, expressed disappointment in Azad’s remarks, calling it a sad day for him to witness a leader of Azad’s stature making such claims. He reminded Azad of the support he received from the National Conference to secure his Rajya Sabha seat in 2015, emphasizing that leaders should refrain from spreading what Azad himself termed as “gossip.”
Azad’s Accusations and Farooq Abdullah’s Rebuttal
In an interview with a private television channel, Ghulam Nabi Azad alleged that NC leaders sought meetings in Delhi after 11 pm, raising suspicions. Azad further claimed gossip in Delhi suggesting that the Abdullahs knew about the Article 370 abrogation in 2019 and were detained willingly. Farooq Abdullah countered these allegations, asserting the party’s commitment to secularism and urging Azad to explain his reasons for breaking away from Congress.
Omar Abdullah’s Sharp Response and Congress’ Reaction
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded sharply to Azad’s accusations, questioning Azad’s change in stance from seeking Rajya Sabha seats to making inflammatory claims. Omar highlighted the irony of their detention while Azad remained free and took a dig at Azad’s political decisions. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh dismissed Azad, stating that his behavior has been a “disgrace.”
Farooq Abdullah emphasized that the National Conference had held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the August 5, 2019, decision on Article 370. He dismissed Azad’s claims, calling them “childish and laughable.” The political discourse continues to intensify, with each party defending its stance amidst accusations and counter-accusations.
