National Panthers Party Activists Demand Swift Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir
Protest Against BJP and Election Commission
In a fervent display of dissent, activists from the National Panthers Party (NPP) convened in protest on Monday, decrying the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the delay in conducting assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Led by their president, Harsh Dev Singh, a contingent of NPP activists congregated outside the State Election Commission (SEC) headquarters to voice their concerns over the protracted postponement of assembly polls.
Accusations of Democracy’s Erosion
Harsh Dev Singh minced no words as he addressed the media, asserting, “We are holding this protest to highlight the murder of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir over the past five years by the ruling BJP… The ECI has surrendered before the BJP and is depriving the people of a democratically elected government.” He alleged that the BJP, in its five-year tenure, had consistently used various pretexts to delay the elections, insinuating that these actions undermined democratic principles.

A Question of Confidence and Motive
Singh further asserted that the BJP’s reluctance to hold elections stemmed from a lack of confidence in the victory of its candidates, owing to what he referred to as flawed policies. He contended that this hesitation was a strategic maneuver to perpetuate indirect rule in Jammu and Kashmir. According to him, while all other political parties had supported holding assembly elections when the ECI assessed the situation in 2019, the BJP had managed to sway the Commission to its tune, thereby postponing the polls.
A Matter of National Significance
Singh underscored the national significance of the issue, emphasizing that Jammu and Kashmir’s exceptional situation, marked by delayed elections, reflected poorly on the country’s democratic institutions. He also expressed concerns that the ECI’s credibility had eroded among the people of Jammu and Kashmir due to these delays.
As the protests continue, the demand for timely and transparent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir remains a pressing concern for activists, underscoring the importance of upholding democratic values and principles in the region.
