Moderate to Heavy Rain Hits Jammu and Kashmir, Relief Likely from April 5
Srinagar, Apr 4 — Jammu and Kashmir witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, though conditions began to stabilise on Saturday, bringing some relief across the region.
Weather forecaster Sonam Lotus said rainfall has largely stopped in most areas, but cloudy skies are expected to persist through the day.
He noted that fresh spells of rain and thunderstorms could develop in the afternoon, with a possibility of hailstorms in parts of central and south Kashmir.
Referring to recent trends, Lotus said the region saw good precipitation in 2023 and 2024 due to active Western Disturbances. He added that weather conditions are likely to improve from April 5, with generally dry weather expected until the evening of April 7.
However, another Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir between April 7 and 8, which could bring fresh precipitation.
Authorities said the overall situation remains stable, with no flood alerts issued so far as water levels are within safe limits. Still, residents in low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas have been advised to remain cautious.
Explaining seasonal patterns, Lotus said rainfall, thunderstorms and even hailstorms are common during March and May as the region transitions from winter to spring. Rising temperatures during this period lead to atmospheric instability, often triggering such weather events.
Meanwhile, advisories have been issued for farmers, asking them to postpone spraying activities until April 4. The window between April 5 and the forenoon of April 7, particularly April 6, has been identified as favourable for such work.
Commuters have also been advised to check road and traffic updates before travelling, as weather conditions may change quickly in some areas.
