Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched a strong criticism against the Pakistan Supreme Court following its ruling that allowed Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to claim reserved seats in the parliament. Nawaz urged the apex court judges to let the country progress, Geo News reported.

Speaking at an event in Lahore on Friday, Nawaz accused the Supreme Court judges of “rewriting the constitution” to facilitate one individual’s return to mainstream politics. “Who are those people who do not like the country making progress and re-write the Constitution,” she questioned.

The Chief Minister further alleged that the Supreme Court granted PTI relief that it did not even seek, accusing them of trying to bring back “the nation’s criminal,” referring to PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In a significant legal victory for PTI, the nation’s top court ruled on July 12 that the party was eligible for the allocation of reserved seats. This decision enables PTI’s return to the parliament after being expelled following the ECP’s December 2023 ruling and changes the composition of the National Assembly, as reported by Geo News.

Nawaz criticized the court for giving PTI members 15 days to submit affidavits claiming their affiliation with the party, despite already submitting documents affirming allegiance with another party. She warned that any attempts to create political instability would be met with strong resistance and asserted that the government would complete its five-year tenure.

Highlighting the importance of constitutional adherence, Nawaz argued that decisions should be made based on the constitution, not personal conscience. She reiterated her claim that those the court sought to reintegrate into politics were involved in criminal activities and hindered national development.

The PML-N leader also emphasized that the law and constitution do not permit floor crossing, contradicting the Supreme Court’s ruling that seemingly allowed it. Nawaz’s remarks underscore the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan and the challenges facing the coalition government.
