Mary-Kom Clarifies Retirement Misreports: Still Committed to Sport and Fitness
The 41-year-old boxer, who has surpassed the age limit for amateur competition, clarified that she has not formally announced her retirement despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
Contrary to previous statements attributed to her, the Manipuri flyweight (51kg) category boxer emphasized in a statement to PTI, “I haven’t announced retirement yet and I have been misquoted. I will personally come in front of the media whenever I want to announce it. I have gone through some media reports stating that I have announced retirement and this is not true.”
Addressing the source of the confusion, she explained, “I was attending a school event in Dibrugarh (Assam) on January 24, 2024, wherein I was motivating children, and I said, ‘I still have the hunger of achieving in sports but age limit in Olympics doesn’t allow me to participate though I can carry on with my sport.'”
Emphasizing her commitment to her sport and maintaining her fitness, she added, “I am still focusing on my fitness and whenever I will announce retirement, I will inform everyone. Please do correct this.”
Mary Kom, a highly decorated Indian sportsperson, last competed in the Tokyo Olympics, where she suffered a pre-quarterfinal loss. Speculation about her future intensified as she refrained from entering professional boxing, where age restrictions are not in place.
With an illustrious career that includes six Asian titles and half a dozen world gold medals, Mary Kom is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished Indian athletes. A Khel Ratna awardee and former Rajya Sabha MP, she received the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award, in 2020.
