Heavy rainfall lashed the Jammu region on Thursday, leading to significant damage, landslides, and flooding across several areas. The downpour, while providing relief from the recent hot and humid conditions, caused widespread disruption.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered the body of a 60-year-old man from the swollen Tawi River near Gujjar Nagar. The man’s identity and the cause of death have yet to be determined.
In Bhatindi, the heavy rains caused the collapse of two homes and washed away a portion of a road, though no casualties were reported.
The meteorological department recorded 112 mm of rainfall in Jammu district over 24 hours, while Reasi district and Katra town, the base camp for Vaishno Devi pilgrims, received 74.5 mm and 72.9 mm of rain, respectively.
Several low-lying areas in Jammu city, including Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Chatta, and Akhnoor, experienced severe waterlogging. Residents faced difficulties as floodwaters from nearby nullahs entered their homes and shops.
The 270-kilometer Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for several hours due to landslides at multiple locations, including Hingni, Mehad, Panthiyal, and Kishtwari Pather.
Traffic was restored by noon after road clearance teams removed debris from the highway.
The meteorological department has forecast wet weather for the Jammu division until August 10, with intermittent to moderate rainfall expected until August 5.
Authorities have urged residents to stay away from water bodies and avoid slide-prone areas as a safety precaution.
