Following The Assassination Of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei Elected As New Supreme Leader of Iran
Tehran — Iran’s Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new Supreme Leader. Known for his low-profile demeanor yet considerable influence, Mojtaba has been deeply embedded in Iran’s revolutionary system since childhood.
Born on September 8, 1969, in Mashhad, a major Shiite religious centre, Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei grew up in a clerical household as his father rose through the ranks of Iran’s anti-Shah movement and later the Islamic Republic following the 1979 revolution. After completing secondary school in 1987, he joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and served near the end of the Iran-Iraq War. He later pursued religious studies in Qom under conservative clerics and eventually taught theology and Islamic jurisprudence.
Despite never holding an official government post, Mojtaba’s influence within Iran’s political and religious establishment has been widely noted. He is believed to have backed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in both the 2005 presidential election and the disputed 2009 election, which triggered nationwide protests.
In November 2019, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Mojtaba Khamenei, alleging that he represented the Supreme Leader “in an official capacity” and worked closely with the IRGC-Qods Force and Basij to advance Iran’s domestic and regional policies.
Mojtaba holds the clerical rank of Hojjatoleslam, a mid-ranking position below Ayatollah. Analysts say his influence stems not from formal office but from his connections within Iran’s political, military, and religious networks.
Mojtaba Khamenei is married to Zahra Haddad-Adel, the daughter of Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, a conservative politician and former chairman of Iran’s Parliament. The couple reportedly has three children, though few details about them are publicly available.
The election of Mojtaba Khamenei marks a historic moment in Iran, as the country transitions leadership amid ongoing regional conflict, rising international scrutiny, and domestic uncertainties following the death of a long-serving Supreme Leader.
