Mamata Banerjee to Attend One Nation One Election Committee Meeting in Delhi
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to visit New Delhi on Monday, following the inaugural day of the state budget session, to participate in the meeting of the ‘one nation one election’ committee scheduled for February 6. Despite expressing her disagreement with the concept of simultaneous polls, Banerjee will engage in discussions with the committee. Last month, she conveyed her reservations about the idea, emphasizing its potential conflict with India’s constitutional arrangements. Banerjee’s Delhi visit occurs amid strains in her party’s relationship with Congress, as she hinted at the Trinamool Congress going solo in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee’s Stand Against ‘One Nation One Election’
Despite her dissent, Mamata Banerjee has agreed to participate in the committee meeting, reflecting her commitment to engaging with the democratic process and expressing her opinions. Banerjee’s stance against ‘one nation one election’ aligns with her broader concerns about its impact on constitutional principles. The meeting on February 6 will provide a platform for discussions on this contentious issue, where the Chief Minister is expected to articulate her reservations and contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed electoral reform.
Delhi Visit Beyond Politics
Emphasizing that her brief visit to Delhi is not primarily for political reasons, Mamata Banerjee clarified that the purpose is to attend the committee meeting. She plans to be in the capital for a day, returning on February 6, following the afternoon session with the committee. While political dynamics evolve, the Chief Minister remains committed to representing the interests and perspectives of West Bengal, both within and outside the state.
