Make The Road States Responds to Trump Executive Order Targeting Cities and States that Protect and Welcome Immigrants
NEW YORK CITY, NY. (April 29, 2025)—Yesterday, the Trump Administration continued its chaotic and cruel attack on immigrant communities by signing an executive order that targets cities and states that protect and welcome immigrants. Despite public outcry and multiple court losses, the Trump administration is not following due process and instead remains fixated on punishing those who do not comply with his unjust agenda. This approach amounts to extortion which will punish everyone in the community that relies on the federal government as a partner to improve the lives of its constituents. Allowing members of the community to attend a religious service of their choosing and school without fear should be seen as a common sense, Constitutionally-protected approach.
In response, Theo Oshiro, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road States, issued the following statement:
“Immigrant communities and advocates across the country have fought for years to implement laws and policies that protect and welcome immigrants who are part of the local fabric, economy and way of life. Today, Trump is continuing his anti-immigrant crusade by threatening to seize essential funding for cities and states that decline to carry out his mass incarceration and deportation agenda. Trump is also threatening to take us back to the past and weaken local economies by undoing the actions of lawmakers who have decided to provide tuition assistance to immigrants so that they may go to college and contribute to the places they call home. Studies have shown that sanctuary city laws and tuition assistance programs make our communities safer and stronger. We urge cities and states to remain resolute in their protection and support of immigrant communities.”
