Maharashtra Civic Elections 2026: Maharashtra witnessed a major democratic exercise on Thursday as voting began for civic body elections across 29 municipal corporations, prompting the state government to declare January 15 a public holiday in all polling regions. The move, ordered by the State Election Commission, was aimed at ensuring maximum voter participation and facilitating a smooth electoral process in urban centres, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur, and Nashik.
Government offices, semi-government institutions, municipal bodies, public sector undertakings, and banks remained closed for the day. Central government offices located within the election zones were also covered under the holiday. While private offices were not mandated to shut operations, many chose to remain closed or operate with reduced staff in view of the polling day.
Despite the shutdown, essential services continued without interruption. Hospitals, emergency medical services, police, and fire departments remained fully operational. Public transport services, including Mumbai’s suburban trains, BEST buses, and state-run transport services, functioned as usual, with authorities making additional arrangements to help voters reach polling stations conveniently.
Educational institutions were also affected by the holiday. Government and civic-run schools and colleges suspended classes for the day, while several private institutions followed suit, particularly those whose premises were designated as polling centres. Election officials ensured that polling stations were equipped with basic amenities such as electricity, clean drinking water, toilets, and ramps to accommodate senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and voters accompanied by children.
To maintain law and order during the election period, the Maharashtra government enforced a four-day dry period from January 13 to 16 across all 29 municipal corporation areas. The sale and consumption of alcohol were prohibited, with liquor shops, bars, and permit rooms remaining shut. Authorities warned of strict action against violations and increased security deployment in sensitive localities.
The impact of the civic polls extended to financial markets as well. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange observed a complete trading holiday on Thursday, with all segments, including equities, derivatives, commodities, and electronic gold receipts, remaining closed.
At the heart of the elections is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India’s largest and wealthiest civic body, with an annual budget exceeding ₹74,400 crore. The BMC polls are being held after a delay of nearly four years, adding to their political significance. Across Maharashtra, voters are choosing representatives for 2,869 seats spread over 893 wards, with 15,931 candidates in the fray. An estimated 3.48 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots.

The Mumbai contest has drawn particular attention due to the high-stakes political battle unfolding in the city. The election is being closely watched as a test of strength between the reunited Thackeray brothers and the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. For the Thackerays, the BMC represents both political legacy and survival, while the ruling alliance sees the election as an opportunity to consolidate its influence in Maharashtra’s urban landscape.
Polling began at 7:30 am and is scheduled to conclude at 5:30 pm. The counting of votes will take place on January 16, with results expected to shape the future political narrative of the state’s urban governance.
As Maharashtra votes, the civic polls are being seen not just as local body elections, but as a broader reflection of shifting political equations and public sentiment in one of India’s most politically significant states.
