Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin Arrested by Chennai Police Over Controversial Remarks on Actor Trisha

Chennai, Aug. 4 [VoM News]: Following the offensive remarks controversy towards actor Trisha, Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested by Chennai Police from his residence on Tuesday morning.

As per details available, the police escorted Udhayanidhi from his home as he smiled before the media.

Reacting to the action, he described the arrest as a “joke” and said he would challenge it through legal means.

The controversy stems from a protest rally over the Cauvery water dispute held in Thanjavur on Monday.

During his speech criticising Chief Minister Joseph Vijay over the state’s water issues, members of the crowd chanted Trisha’s name.

Udhayanidhi paused and responded with a remark that opposition parties described as an offensive double entendre, triggering widespread criticism.

The DMK condemned the arrest, alleging political vendetta.

Party leader T.K.S. Elangovan said Udhayanidhi had merely criticised the Chief Minister’s performance and had not made any direct reference to Trisha.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), however, defended the police action.

Party leader Americai Narayanan said Udhayanidhi was arrested not for criticising the government but for allegedly insulting a woman.

He also criticised the DMK leader’s remarks and accused him of using vulgar language.

Following the speech, TVK submitted a complaint to the National Commission for Women (NCW) and also lodged a police complaint, alleging that Udhayanidhi used offensive and double-meaning remarks against a prominent female public figure from a political platform.

In its complaint, TVK argued that such language normalises the objectification and verbal harassment of women in public life.

The Tamil Nadu BJP had also demanded Udhayanidhi’s arrest. BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy described the remarks as vulgar and shameful and urged authorities to take legal action.
