KL Rahul Takes on Dual Role as Wicketkeeper and Middle-Order Bat in South Africa Test Series
KL Rahul is poised to take on a distinct role in Test cricket, diverging from his customary opening position, as India faces South Africa in their ongoing series. Despite accumulating 2642 runs and seven centuries in 47 Tests, with six centuries achieved away from home, Rahul is set to embrace a new challenge in his 48th Test. Captain Rohit Sharma has designated Rahul as India’s wicketkeeper for the series, announcing a shift to the middle order, departing from his usual opening slot.
Rohit Sharma, who himself has prospered from a positional change, expressed optimism about Rahul’s adaptability. He highlighted the necessity for cricketers to undergo transformations and explore different roles in their careers. Rohit emphasized that Rahul’s successful batting at No.5 in ODIs and his commendable wicketkeeping in the 2023 World Cup contributed to the decision. Rahul’s performance in the World Cup included 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 75.33, featuring two half-centuries and an unbeaten 97, along with a century.
Commending Rahul’s wicketkeeping skills in the World Cup, Rohit Sharma stated, “He has been really working hard and he himself is quite keen to take up that role as well. He gives us an option to play a solid batter at five, six, or seven, whatever that position may be.”
Rohit Sharma underscored the security Rahul’s experience adds to India’s middle order in South Africa. He noted Rahul’s adaptability to different conditions and expressed confidence in the seasoned player’s ability to understand the game’s nuances. Despite Rahul’s past success as an opener in South Africa, Rohit believes his transition to the middle order will fortify India’s batting lineup.
Rohit Sharma acknowledged Rahul’s enthusiasm for the new role while acknowledging the uncertainty regarding how long he intends to continue as the designated wicketkeeper. India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, echoed the sentiment, describing the move as an exciting challenge for Rahul. Dravid highlighted Rahul’s extensive preparation, particularly in white-ball cricket, and expressed confidence that the shift would help ease him into the role, considering the likelihood of more pace bowling than spin in South Africa.
