Kalpasar Project Gains Momentum After PM Modi Visits Netherlands, Pact Signed

NEW DELHI, MAY 18, 2026 [VoM News]: After the diplomatic visit of Narendra Modi to the Netherlands, significant progress has been reported on the Kalpasar project, which has faced immense delays.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, during the trip visited the Afsluitdijk and reviewed the iconic 32-kilometre barrier dam in the Netherlands.

After reviewing one of the world’s leading water management structures, Modi stated that the Netherlands and India share geographical similarities, and that Dutch engineering techniques could guide Gujarat’s proposed mega dam project.

A letter of intent has been signed between the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management regarding the Kalpasar project, which would help strengthen cooperation and partnership under the recently launched India-Netherlands Strategic Partnership on Water.

The Kalpasar project, proposed to be constructed across the Gulf of Khambhat to store freshwater from seven rivers flowing into the Arabian Sea, has faced immense delays. The project was originally conceptualised during the tenure of Narendra Modi as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, but has now gained momentum following recent diplomatic efforts.
