India Rejects Hague Arbitration Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty as ‘Null and Void’

India Rejects Hague Arbitration Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty as ‘Null and Void’

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 [VoM News]: As the Hague-based Court of Arbitration issued its ruling on the Indus Waters Treaty, political reactions in both countries have intensified.

India has reacted strongly to the ruling, rejecting it outright and calling it “null and void.”

Randhir Jaiswal, while responding to the development, stated that the allegedly illegally constituted Court of Arbitration issued the ruling on May 15, 2025, related to maximum pondage and interpretation issues under the treaty.

Jaiswal added that India completely rejects the present decision and also rejects all earlier pronouncements made by the arbitration court.

According to sources within the ministry, India has never recognised the legitimacy of the arbitration court and considers it invalid and illegally constituted.

The decades-old Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan has remained under suspension following the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. The treaty governs the usage and sharing of waters from the Indus river system.

India has also accused Pakistan of politicising bilateral issues at the global level and continuing what it described as a policy of state-sponsored terrorism.
