JP Nadda to Contest Rajya Sabha Elections from Gujarat: A Strategic Move by BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president, JP Nadda, is set to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat on Thursday, making a significant political move. Currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh, Nadda’s decision to contest from Gujarat underscores the party’s strategic considerations.
In its latest announcement on February 14, Wednesday, the BJP unveiled its list of candidates for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha polls. The party has strategically fielded seven nominees, with four hailing from Gujarat and three from Maharashtra. This move is indicative of the BJP’s focus on strengthening its presence in these crucial states.
Diverse Nominees: Leaders from Gujarat and Maharashtra Step Up
Apart from JP Nadda, the BJP has nominated three other prominent leaders from Gujarat, namely Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayankbhai Nayak, and Jashvantsinh Parmar. Meanwhile, the nominees for Maharashtra include Medha Kulkarni, Ajit Gopchhade, and the recently joined Ashok Chavan, who switched allegiance from the Congress to the BJP earlier in the week. These diverse nominees highlight the party’s efforts to bring in leaders with varied backgrounds and experiences.
Union Ministers Nominated: Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan in the Fray
In a strategic move, the BJP has announced the nomination of two Union ministers for the upcoming elections. Ashwini Vaishnaw, representing Odisha, and L Murugan, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, are set to contest for Rajya Sabha seats. This decision showcases the party’s intention to leverage the experience and influence of its ministers in the upper house.
Final Push: BJP’s Candidate Lineup and Election Details
Earlier this week, the BJP had revealed a list of 14 candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, including notable figures like former Union Minister RPN Singh and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi. With today being the last day for filing nomination papers, the Election Commission has scheduled the Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states on February 27.
The voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on this date, and the election results will be announced later in the day. This biennial Rajya Sabha poll, encompassing 56 seats across various states, marks a crucial moment for the BJP as it seeks to secure its position in the upper house.
