J&K Sports Council’s Pioneering Achievements in 2023
Under the guidance of LG Manoj Sinha, the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council achieved remarkable milestones in 2023. Spearheaded by Secretary Nuzhat Gull, the council orchestrated events like Legends Cricket League and Khelo India, showcasing the active participation of J&K athletes in both national and international events, bringing honor to the region.
Key achievements include the historic feat by J&K athletes Rakesh & Sarita, who secured India’s first-ever Gold at the Archery World Championship. In Moscow Wushu Stars, Sh. Bhanu Partap Singh, Sh. Abhishek Jamwal, and Smt. Jiya clinched three Gold Medals each, with Sh. Aman Singh and Sh. Priyanshu Singh securing Silver and Bronze respectively.
The UT witnessed a surge in youth participation in sports activities, engaging 53 lakh youth across various levels. Programs like “My Youth My Pride” and “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” played a pivotal role in promoting sports enthusiasm.
Moreover, J&K’s stellar performance in hosting the National 2nd and 3rd Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg showcased its prowess. These events witnessed massive participation and resulted in commendable achievements, securing medals and accolades for the region.
Athletes from J&K showcased their talent, winning numerous medals both nationally and internationally. In 2022-23, they secured 262 Gold, 228 Silver, and 304 Bronze medals nationally, and 05 Gold, 02 Silver, and 17 Bronze medals internationally. The athletes’ recent performances till December 6, 2023, further added to these commendable achievements.
The installation of high mass lights boosted evening sports enthusiasm among young athletes, evident in community events drawing large crowds, such as the football cup final at Tulibal Sopore Khushal Stadium and district-level sporting activities in Srinagar.
The sports infrastructure has significantly improved, witnessing the establishment of multisport synthetic turfs, the construction of new tennis courts, and the creation of numerous Panchayat-level fields. Notably, over 300 projects, including stadium constructions and lighting projects, have been completed, enhancing sports facilities across the region.
