The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) successfully solved the double murder case of retired principal Sanjay Chandel and his wife, Veena Kumari, within 72 hours of the incident. The couple was found dead in their Patta Bohri residence in Jammu on September 14, 2024.

An alert was raised around 6 PM on the same day, leading to an immediate response from the police. Upon arrival, the bodies were transferred to GMC Jammu for post-mortem, and an investigation was launched under inquest proceedings.

A crucial lead came from the family members, supported by CCTV footage showing a suspect near the victims’ home. The case was soon converted into a murder investigation, and multiple police teams were formed under SP Rural Jammu.

The suspect, Deepak Singh, an e-rickshaw owner from Colonel Colony, Jammu, was arrested within three days from Jalandhar. Deepak had known the victims for several years, frequently helping them, especially due to Sanjay Chandel’s health issues.

An altercation on the day of the crime escalated, resulting in the tragic deaths. Deepak’s financial distress is believed to have been a key motive, as he had transferred money to a woman without his family’s consent and sold his phone to cover debts.

Local residents praised the police for their swift action in solving the case, bringing relief and justice to the community.
