Lebanon, Israel Hold Fresh US-Mediated Talks in Rome on Southern Withdrawal

    Rome, Aug. 5 [VoM News]: In a major news update, Lebanon and Israel began a fresh round of Us-sponsered negotiations in Rome, AFP reported.

    The negoitations to which Beirut seeking a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon as an existing framework agreement.

    As the delegations from both countries have arrived at the US Embassy in the Italian capital, where the talks are scheduled to continue until Thursday.

    Meanwhile, the US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Washington remains committed to supporting both governments in advancing a process that promotes lasting security, addresses threats to Israel and restores Lebanese state authority in southern Lebanon.

    The latest discussions follow a framework agreement reached during negotiations in Washington in June.

    The disarmament of Hezbollah, a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese Army in the area, are major roots in the deal and beginning with designated pilot zones are also in consideration.

    This meeting marks the seventh round of US-mediated talks since Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on Israel in March in support of Iran, prompting Israeli airstrikes and a ground offensive in Lebanon.

    Whereas, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem criticised the negotiations, saying direct talks with Israel would bring “nothing but shame, humiliation and successive compromises” for Lebanon.

    While showering the heap of criticism at Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem accused him of failing to remain impartial.

    He alleged that his stance was incompatible with his constitutional role.

    Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Monday urged both sides to continue negotiations in a constructive manner and work towards the full implementation of the framework agreement.
