Investigation Unveils Suspected Immigration Network in Gujarat After Flight Detained in France
A recent episode involving a Nicaragua-bound flight, diverted back from France due to suspected human trafficking, has put the spotlight on a group of passengers from Gujarat.
The Airbus A340, carrying 276 individuals, including 60 from Gujarat, was grounded in France, leading to an intense interrogation of 20 passengers upon their return to India on December 26.
According to a senior state Crime Investigation Department (CID) official, these passengers, amid questioning, are under scrutiny to determine any potential involvement in illegal immigration plans, particularly crossing into the United States after reaching Latin America.
S P Rajkumar, Additional Director General of Police, CID – Crime and Railways, emphasized the need to scrutinize the travel agents facilitating this trip.
Despite claims of touring Nicaragua as mere tourists, authorities are examining their travel documents and financial transactions, probing for any indications of ulterior motives.
The investigation, shrouded in secrecy due to non-cooperation from the passengers, is exploring all angles of the case.
The CID (Crime) has mobilized four teams to probe the involvement of agents promising illegal entry into the US and other nations.
The flight’s detention in France triggered a judicial investigation into potential human trafficking, as Nicaragua continues to attract asylum seekers aiming for the US.
Dubbed ‘dunki’ flights, these routes to Nicaragua or other countries with lenient travel regulations have increasingly become associated with potential illegal immigration.
Recent data from the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) highlighted a significant surge in attempted illegal entries, with Indians contributing substantially to this trend.
The incident has drawn attention to a suspected immigration network operating from Gujarat, prompting a comprehensive investigation by Indian authorities into the complexities of illegal immigration routes and associated networks.
