Intelligence Warns of Iranian Plot Weeks Before Attempt on Trump’s Life

    1. Intelligence on Iranian plot to kill Trump surfaced weeks before the assassination attempt.
    2. No direct link between the Iranian plot and the 20-year-old shooter.
    3. Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally, resulting in injuries and one fatality.

The United States had received intelligence from a human source regarding an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump weeks before the recent attempt on his life, according to national security officials. This information led to heightened security measures for Trump. However, officials clarified that there is no known connection between the Iranian plot and the 20-year-old man who attempted to assassinate Trump on Saturday.

The US Secret Service and Trump’s campaign were alerted about the Iranian threat, leading to increased security measures, as confirmed by a US national security official. Trump and his former Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, have been targets of threats from Tehran since the 2020 drone strike that killed Qassim Soleimani, leader of Iran’s Quds Force, in Iraq.

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the US Secret Service, stated that the agency is “constantly receiving new potential threat information and taking action to adjust resources as needed,” emphasizing their commitment to addressing threats seriously. Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, noted that US security officials have been monitoring Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years.

The Iranian mission at the United Nations dismissed the intelligence report as “unsubstantiated and malicious,” asserting that Trump “is a criminal who must be prosecuted and punished in a court of law.”

Trump made his first public appearance at the Republican National Convention on Monday since surviving the assassination attempt on Saturday. Wearing a white bandage on his right ear, Trump received a standing ovation from the audience but made no remarks. He stood alongside his newly announced running mate, Senator JD Vance.

The assassination attempt occurred during a campaign rally on Saturday when gunshots rang out and Secret Service agents stormed the stage. Trump later revealed that the bullet had pierced the upper part of his right ear. One rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured. The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The case remains under investigation.
