The Comoros-flagged oil tanker, MT Falcon Prestige, transmitted a distress call around 10 PM on July 14 off the coast of Oman, indicating it had capsized. The tanker was carrying 16 crew members, including 13 Indian seafarers. A source confirmed, “A search and rescue operation for the seafarers, coordinated by the Oman Maritime Security Center (OMSC), is on. Indian Navy has also joined the search and rescue operations.”

The Indian Navy has deployed warship INS Teg and maritime surveillance aircraft P-8I to assist in the mission. The INS Teg, which was conducting an operational turnaround in the area, was redirected on July 15 to participate in the rescue efforts. The warship successfully located the capsized oil tanker on the morning of July 16.

The tanker, Prestige Falcon, capsized 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah, near the Omani port of Duqm. The Maritime Security Centre confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating, “A Comoros-flagged oil tanker capsized 25 NM southeast of Ras Madrakah. SAR Ops initiated with the relevant authorities. #MaritimeSecurityCentre”

The tanker was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden, according to shipping data by LSEG. Built in 2007, the 117-meter-long oil products tanker was generally used for short voyages. The search and rescue mission continues as authorities work diligently to locate and assist the missing crew members.
