Indian Cricketers Face BCCI Ire Over Ranji Trophy Reluctancy: A Critical Look at Player Commitment
Amid the escalating discussions about Ishan Kishan’s prolonged absence from cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up to address the issue of players idly awaiting the commencement of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season without participating in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. This situation has sparked concerns within the Indian team management, particularly regarding players who, despite being fit, exhibit reluctance towards engaging in the domestic first-class tournament.
Rising Concerns Over Ishan Kishan’s Absence: Mental Health Break and IPL Preparation
Ishan Kishan, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, took a mid-season break during the South Africa tour, citing mental health fatigue. While Team Head Coach Rahul Dravid emphasized the importance of game time before Ishan’s return to the Indian side, the player has chosen to stay out of six consecutive league games in the Ranji Trophy. Spotted practicing with Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya in Baroda, Ishan’s focus on IPL 2024 preparation has drawn criticism from BCCI officials.
BCCI Contemplates Mandating Ranji Trophy Participation: A Move to Rein in Players
A senior BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed the board’s awareness of some players’ reluctance to engage in red-ball cricket. To address this, the BCCI is considering making it mandatory for players to participate in 3-4 Ranji Trophy games. Failure to comply may result in players being ineligible for IPL participation or auction. The move aims to ensure a more committed approach from players, particularly young stars who might otherwise disregard the importance of the Ranji Trophy.
Hardik Pandya’s Unique Case: Balancing Fitness and Format Limitations
While acknowledging the unique circumstances surrounding Hardik Pandya’s extended absence from red-ball cricket due to a back injury since 2018, the BCCI official highlighted the refusal of other young players to participate in the Ranji Trophy. Despite understanding Pandya’s physical limitations and the necessity of keeping him fit for ICC events, the official expressed concern over young players who frequently cite physio work as a reason to avoid domestic red-ball cricket.
