Key Highlights:
- Indian Army inducts Nagastra-1, an indigenous loiter munition by Solar Industries.
- Nagastra-1 features GPS-enabled precision strikes and multiple reuse capabilities.
- Development marks a significant step in India’s defense technology sector.
The Indian Army has inducted Nagastra-1, an indigenous loiter munition developed by Nagpur-based Solar Industries. The Army has placed an order with Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Industries, for 480 units under an emergency purchase agreement, highlighting the readiness of India’s indigenous defense capabilities.
Following a successful Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) from May 20th to 25th, EEL delivered an initial batch of 120 loiter munitions to the Ammunition Depot at Pulgaon, affirming the system’s readiness for deployment.
Nagastra-1 operates in a “kamikaze mode,” capable of neutralizing threats with GPS-enabled precision strikes, boasting an accuracy of 2 meters. This man-portable fixed-wing electric UAV, weighing 9 kilograms, offers a 30-minute endurance, a 15-kilometer man-in-loop range, and a 30-kilometer autonomous mode range. Its electric propulsion system ensures a low acoustic signature, making it undetectable by adversaries at heights over 200 meters.
Equipped with day and night surveillance cameras and a 1-kilogram high explosive fragmenting warhead, Nagastra-1 is effective against soft-skin targets. It can abort missions and execute soft landings with a parachute recovery mechanism, allowing for multiple reuses—a feature that sets it apart from similar systems developed by advanced nations.
Developed in collaboration with Z-Motion Autonomous Systems Pvt Ltd, Bangalore, Nagastra-1 comprises over 75% indigenous content. It is man-portable, weighing 30 kilograms in two rucksacks, and includes essential components such as the Ground Control Station, Communication Control, Payload, and Pneumatic Launcher.
The integration of drone technology has proven to be a force multiplier in military operations globally. The development and deployment of Nagastra-1 are significant milestones in enhancing India’s indigenous capabilities in drone and UAV technology, promising a brighter future for the nation’s defense sector.
