India Slams Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan Poll Plans, Strong Protest Recorded
NEW DELHI, JUNE 06, 2026 [VoM News]: The Government of India on Friday strongly objected to Pakistan’s decision to hold general elections in the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on June 7, 2026.
New Delhi reiterated its position that the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including Gilgit-Baltistan, legally belongs to India, and that the territory remains under Pakistan’s illegal occupation, making it a long-standing dispute.
Through a press release, the Government of India issued a strongly worded statement and lodged a strong protest with Pakistan over its plans to conduct elections in territories that India considers illegally occupied.
The Ministry of External Affairs added that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan region, are integral and inalienable parts of India due to the complete, legal and irrevocable accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India in 1947.

India also rejected what it described as Pakistan’s attempts to bring material changes to the region through electoral exercises or administrative measures.
The statement reiterated that such actions cannot alter the reality that Pakistan remains in illegal occupation of Indian territory and must vacate the areas under its control.
The MEA further accused Pakistan of attempting to divert attention from issues including alleged human rights violations, political repression, economic exploitation and denial of freedoms in the territories under its administration.
Pakistan has planned to conduct the so-called elections for the 33-member Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly after a delay of several months, with major political parties in Pakistan actively campaigning across the region. However, India stated that such exercises lack legitimacy due to the territory’s disputed and illegally occupied status.
