The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) affirmed India’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the cultural identity and rights of baby Ariha Shah, presently in German foster care. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that consular access was granted to Ariha, allowing the sharing of cultural items to immerse her in Indian traditions while ensuring her rights are preserved.

Addressing the weekly briefing, Bagchi emphasized the significance of the issue, highlighting the provision of cultural materials during consular visits aimed at familiarizing Ariha with Indian customs. He also mentioned the celebration of Diwali by embassy officials with the child and permitted visitation by her parents.

Moreover, Bagchi detailed efforts directed at cultural immersion, including providing resource materials to German authorities related to Indian festivals and customs. India maintains consistent engagement with German authorities to safeguard Ariha’s cultural identity, national ties, and rights, ensuring eventual repatriation to India.

Ariha Shah was taken into German foster care following an accidental injury inflicted by her grandmother in September 2021. Since then, the Indian government has consistently raised the issue with German authorities and secured consular access for Ariha.

The family has advocated for Ariha’s return to India, with her mother, Dhara Shah, staging a demonstration at Jantar Mantar, urging German authorities to allow Ariha to celebrate Independence Day with the Indian community in Germany, emphasizing the importance of protecting her cultural rights.

India has underscored its robust child welfare system and shared details of potential foster parents in India, expressing deep concern over Ariha’s continued placement in German foster care, which infringes upon her social, cultural, and linguistic rights as an Indian national. The Indian government remains committed to facilitating Ariha’s return to her socio-cultural milieu in India.
