India Poised to Become a Global Leader in Media and Entertainment: Anurag Thakur
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced that India is set to become the third largest media and entertainment market globally within the next five years. Speaking at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji, Thakur highlighted India’s current position as the fifth largest economy and its comparable rank in the media and entertainment sector.
IFFI Embraces OTT Content
In a significant move, IFFI has introduced the Best Web Series OTT Award for the first time, recognizing the pivotal role of original content creators in India. This decision reflects the transformation in content consumption patterns and the rise of digital platforms, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when OTT platforms provided much-needed entertainment.
Innovations at Film Bazaar
This year’s IFFI also sees the expansion of ‘Film Bazaar’, an event that runs alongside the festival. New additions include a VFX and tech pavilion to showcase cinema innovations, a documentary section to support non-fiction storytelling, and the introduction of Cine Mela, a celebration of India’s diverse culture. These initiatives aim to foster creativity and innovation in the Indian film industry.
Restoration and Digitization of Classic Films
Anurag Thakur also shared plans under the National Film Heritage Mission to restore and digitize 5,000 films and documentaries. The festival will feature world premieres of seven meticulously restored masterpieces by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), furthering the preservation of India’s cinematic heritage.
