India Levels Series with Convincing 106-Run Victory Over England in Visakhapatnam Test
India successfully leveled the series against England with a commanding 106-run victory in the second Test at Visakhapatnam, courtesy of exceptional bowling performances by Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday.
The five-match series is now tied at 1-1.
England began the second session at 194/6, with skipper Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes at the crease. Foakes managed a boundary off Bumrah, bringing England to the 200-run mark in 46.1 overs.
However, a misjudged run between Stokes and Foakes resulted in Stokes being run out for just 11 runs. Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant fielding contributed to England’s crisis, reducing them to 220/7. Foakes then partnered with Tom Hartley, a young spinner with a first-class batting average over 28, aiming to make a significant contribution.
Hartley, having troubled Indian batters earlier, frustrated the Indian spinners with occasional big hits, helping England reach 250 runs in 59.5 overs. The partnership between Foakes and Hartley reached a half-century in 63 balls, providing a glimmer of hope for England.
However, Hartley survived a close leg-before-wicket call and Foakes was dismissed softly, caught by Bumrah, who secured his second wicket. Foakes departed for 36 in 69 balls, leaving England at 275/8, still 124 runs away from victory with only two wickets remaining.
Pacer Mukesh Kumar dismissed debutant Shoaib Bashir, and England stood at 281/9, needing 118 runs for victory with just one wicket in hand. The fate of the match rested on Hartley, who was joined by James Anderson. Bumrah sealed the victory by clean bowling Hartley for 36, and England was bowled out for 292, losing by 106 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah (3/46) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3/72) shone as the standout bowlers for India, while Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, and Axar Patel contributed with a wicket each.
In the earlier part of the match, Zak Crawley’s counterattack was curtailed by the brilliance of India’s spinners, Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, as England ended the first session on day four at 194/6, chasing a target of 399 runs. Despite Crawley’s solid efforts, England couldn’t sustain their momentum, and India emerged victorious in a gripping contest.
