India Launches National Curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education

The Ministry of Women and Child Development in India has introduced a national curriculum for early childhood care and education (ECCE) targeting children aged three to six. Recognizing the critical role of early childhood in development, the curriculum aims to strengthen India’s ECCE landscape. Focused on comprehensive childcare support, the initiative provides a secure environment, trained staff, educational resources, nutritional support, and holistic child development activities. The national curriculum covers various domains, including physical, cognitive, language, socio-emotional, cultural, and positive habits. Additionally, a national framework for early childhood stimulation for children from birth to three years has been launched.

Promoting Comprehensive Childcare Support and Holistic Development

India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development currently supports mothers and children under six through initiatives like Mission Saksham Anganwadi, Poshan 2.0, Palna, and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. The National Curriculum for ECCE 2024 follows the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage 2022, providing a structured approach with weekly learning calendars and a combination of activities. For children from birth to three years, the National Framework for Early Childhood Stimulation 2024 empowers caregivers and Anganwadi Workers for holistic early stimulation, emphasizing responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning based on the Nurturing Care Framework.

Focusing on Brain Development and Responsive Caregiving

Acknowledging that 85% of brain development occurs before the age of six, the initiatives aim to offer age-appropriate stimulation and support. The frameworks address conceptual and practical gaps in understanding care and stimulation, focusing on principles like serve and return, caregiver’s three acts (love, talk, play), and positive guidance. The introduction of the national curriculum and framework reflects India’s commitment to fostering optimal development during early childhood, emphasizing the importance of early learning and responsive caregiving for a healthier future generation.
