What Is “Chinamaxxing”? The Viral Trend Western Creators Are Embracing
A new social media trend called “Chinamaxxing” is gaining popularity across Western platforms, especially TikTok. The term broadly refers to users adopting and showcasing elements of Chinese lifestyle, wellness habits, and cultural aesthetics in their daily routines.
From drinking warm apple-infused water to wearing indoor slippers and practising traditional longevity exercises, creators are sharing videos that frame these habits as healthier, calmer, or more intentional ways of living. Many posts include captions like “you met me at a very Chinese time in my life” and hashtags such as #newlychinese.
How The Trend Spread
The trend has expanded rapidly on TikTok, where influencers play a major role in amplifying it. One prominent creator associated with the meme is Sherry Zhu, a Chinese-American influencer who shares traditional wellness advice with her followers. Her videos often frame “turning Chinese” as adopting disciplined routines and cultural practices.
According to reporting by BBC, supporters argue that Chinamaxxing differs from earlier internet memes about China by portraying the country’s culture in a more aspirational or lifestyle-oriented way rather than as satire.
Cultural Influence And Geopolitics
Some observers link the trend to broader geopolitical shifts and changing perceptions of China, particularly amid global political tensions and economic uncertainty in the West. China’s rapid infrastructure growth, technological development, and highly visible urban modernisation have featured prominently in viral videos.
China’s reopening after strict Covid-era lockdowns has also contributed to renewed visibility of its cities and consumer culture. International exposure to fashion and digital trends — including content tied to brands like Adidas and Chinese social platforms such as Douyin — has further boosted global interest.
At the same time, some analysts suggest that younger Western audiences facing economic uncertainty may be drawn to online portrayals of efficiency, infrastructure and perceived stability.
A More Nuanced Reality
Despite its global visibility, the trend appears to have limited traction on Chinese domestic social media. Critics also note that viral content often leaves out complex issues within China, including youth unemployment and economic pressures in sectors such as real estate.
Many of the services frequently highlighted in lifestyle videos — such as rapid delivery systems — rely on gig economy workers linked to companies like Luckin Coffee.
For some members of the Chinese diaspora, however, the shift in tone has felt notable. After years of online negativity and Sinophobia, the mainstreaming of positive lifestyle narratives about China has been described as a refreshing change.
While it remains unclear how lasting the trend will be, Chinamaxxing reflects how social media continues to shape global cultural perception — sometimes more quickly than politics or policy.
