India Historic General Elections: 97 Crore Eligible Voters and Surge in Youth Participation
On Friday, the Election Commission announced that nearly 97 crore Indians will have the eligibility to cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections this year.
The commission revealed that there has been a noteworthy addition of over two crore young electors aged between 18 to 29 years in the voters’ list. This reflects a significant increase of six per cent in registered voters compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Highlighting the sheer magnitude, the Election Commission stated, “The world’s largest electorate, comprising 96.88 crore individuals, is registered to participate in the upcoming General Elections in India.”
Moreover, the gender ratio has shown improvement, increasing from 940 in 2023 to 948 in 2024, as reported by the poll panel.
An official from the Commission emphasized the special attention given to maintaining the purity and health of the electoral roll, along with a commitment to disclosures and transparency during the revision of electoral rolls.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, during a press conference in Pune, elaborated on the intricacies of the revision process. He highlighted the active participation of political parties at every stage, underlining the importance of collaboration in the electoral process.
