IIFL Finance Shares Witness Small Decline Despite Positive Market Sentiment
After registering a substantial 5% surge in the previous session, IIFL Finance share prices faced a slight dip of over half a percent in the morning session on Friday, despite an overall bullish market trend.
In the past three months, IIFL Finance stocks have trailed behind the Sensex’s growth rate, rising by about 4% compared to the Sensex’s 10% surge within the same period.
However, Motilal Oswal Financial Services maintains an optimistic long-term outlook for IIFL Finance, citing several growth catalysts at play for the company.
The brokerage firm initiated coverage on IIFL Finance with a ‘Buy’ recommendation and a target price of ₹800, projecting a 26% upside potential. Motilal Oswal highlighted IIFL’s transformation into a robust franchise, benefiting from distribution strength, co-lending initiatives, digital loan origination, and superior underwriting capabilities. It anticipates a nearly 25% AUM Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) from FY23 to FY26E.
Key reasons for Motilal Oswal’s bullish view on the stock include:
- Fortified Franchise Expansion: IIFL has strategically expanded its branch network, particularly across gold, microfinance institutions (MFIs), and home loans, currently boasting nearly 4,600 branches compared to approximately 2,600 as of March 2021. This network expansion, combined with partnerships for loan origination, is poised to drive growth.
- Enhanced Liability Management: IIFL has substantially reduced its short-term borrowings post-IL&FS default, significantly improving its borrowing mix and strengthening its balance sheet. A credit rating upgrade to AA+ can potentially reduce borrowing costs by 20-25bps.
- Stable Net Interest Margin (NIM) Outlook: A strategic shift towards higher-yielding segments, especially MFIs, coupled with fixed-rate AUM (approximately 53%), positions IIFL to mitigate borrowing cost hikes. The NIM is expected to improve to nearly 7.5% in FY24E.
- Co-lending and RoA Enhancement: Partnerships with digital platforms enable efficient loan originations, particularly in the digital loans segment. Co-lending strategies enhance Return on Assets (RoA) and offer more predictability in earnings.
- Operating Leverage and Benign Credit Costs: The company’s focus on productivity across branches is likely to lower opex-to-average AUM ratio by FY26. Gold and home loans, contributing 65% to the AUM mix, exhibit robust asset quality, helping mitigate risks in MFI and digital loan segments.
While facing a minor dip in the market, IIFL Finance remains an attractive proposition, backed by its diversified growth strategies and stable fundamentals.
