ICC Rejects Usman Khawaja Bid for Humanitarian Message on Bat and Shoes, Player Defiant in Display
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rejected Australian batsman Usman Khawaja’s bid to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Khawaja’s recent application to feature an image of a dove and an olive branch on his bat and shoes was turned down by the ICC, citing their regulations prohibiting the display of personal messages on players’ clothing or equipment.
During Australia’s training session on Sunday, the left-handed batsman defiantly exhibited the logo on the back of his bat and his shoe, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The emblem Khawaja sought to showcase is a nod to Article One of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, emphasizing the principle that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
In response to Khawaja’s request, an ICC spokesperson informed ESPNcricinfo, “The ICC, after giving due consideration to Usman Khawaja’s request for a personal message logo on his bat for the remainder of the Test series against Pakistan, did not approve the application. Personal messages of this nature are not allowed as per Clause F of the Clothing and Equipment Regulations, which can be found on the ICC Playing Conditions page. The ICC is supportive of players using their platforms outside of the playing arena to promote human rights, peace, and equality and would encourage him to continue to use alternative platforms.”
This is not the first time Khawaja has run afoul of the ICC regulations. He previously faced charges under the same clause for wearing a black armband without prior approval during the first Test against Pakistan in Perth.
