ICC Rates Pitch for Bangladesh vs. New Zealand Test as “Unsatisfactory”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has flagged the pitch used in the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur as “unsatisfactory” in accordance with the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.
David Boon, the ICC Match Referee, submitted a report to the ICC, expressing concerns raised by match officials. Boon consulted with both team captains before finalizing the assessment.
Consequently, the venue has incurred one demerit point due to the pitch’s quality concerns. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been notified and has a window of 14 days to appeal against this sanction.
Boon remarked, “The outfield was in very good condition, managing the rain admirably. However, it appeared that the pitch might have been inadequately prepared. On the opening day, it lacked hardness and was strewn with grass clippings. Throughout the match, the bounce was inconsistent, with several deliveries unexpectedly rising from the surface. Notably, deliveries from spin bowlers posed challenges, veering over the batsmen’s shoulders when playing forward and occasionally keeping remarkably low.”
The pitch’s irregular behavior impacted the match significantly, raising concerns about its preparedness and surface quality, as observed by match officials. The ICC’s assessment and subsequent demerit point serve as a regulatory measure to maintain pitch standards in international Test matches.
The BCB holds the option to appeal against this penalty, and the ICC will consider any arguments presented during this appeal period. The outcome of this assessment highlights the importance of ensuring optimal pitch conditions for fair and competitive Test cricket.
