Guwahati-Police Files FIR Against Rahul-Gandhi for Alleged Assault During Congress Yatra
Guwahati City Police has taken suo-moto action by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for alleged assault on government servants during the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Guwahati on January 23, as per a press release from the Guwahati Police Commissionerate.
The charges against Rahul Gandhi include disobedience to the legal order of public servants, violation of permission conditions, and obstruction to government servants while carrying out their lawful duties.
The Congress had organized a ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ from Meghalaya to Kamrup (rural) through Guwahati city. To ensure minimal inconvenience to the public, permission was granted for the Yatra to follow a specific route through the Khanapara bypass-Koinadhara- Basistha Chariali- Beharbari-Lokhra Chariali-Gorchuk Chariali-Boragaon Chariali-Jalukbari up to Saraighat bridge via National Highway. This permission came with the clear condition that they cannot enter congested city areas through any other route, emphasizing the approved path.
Considering Rahul Gandhi’s Z+ ASL CRPF Protectee status on an all-India basis, security measures were meticulously arranged to avoid any security risks. Deviating from the approved route would have compromised the safety of the protected individual, the police stated.
The Yatra’s program had received approval from all concerned parties, including Congress members, during the Advance Security Liaison (ASL) meeting held on January 21 with stakeholders.
However, to the surprise of the administration, when the Yatra reached near Khanapara Traffic point on NH-27, Congress leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, along with Jitender Singh, KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, Srinivas BV, Kanhaiyya Kumar, Gaurav Gogoi, Debobrata Saikia, Bhupen Bora, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Ramen Kumar Sarma, and others, allegedly incited the crowd with a criminal conspiracy. They diverted from the approved route, violating the agreed-upon ASL terms and the permission granted by the Guwahati City Commissionerate.
This deviation resulted in the crowd turning violent and unruly as they proceeded towards GS Road (Guwahati City), obstructing the public way, namely NH 37.
Despite advisories from senior police officers present to adhere to the designated route, the crowd, allegedly led by senior Congress leaders, forcefully changed the course towards GS Road by breaking police barricades and assaulting police personnel performing their lawful duties.
Efforts by the police to persuade the leaders and the crowd to follow the approved route according to ASL were reportedly refused, and the crowd was allegedly incited with inflammatory words to break barricades and change the route.
Consequently, the crowd became violent, resulting in injuries to four police personnel, including SI Tirtha Deka of Basistha PS, and grievous injuries to one police personnel, namely LNK45 Babul Hajong of 8th Assam Police Battalion.
An FIR has been registered at Basistha Police Station under Sections 120(B), 143, 147, 188, 283, 353, 332, 333, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The case is currently under investigation, according to the press release.
