GMC Jammu Boosts Armed Security After Kolkata Medical College Tragedy
Key Highlights:
- GMC Jammu deploys armed security in response to Kolkata medic’s rape and murder.
- 10-12 SSB personnel to secure hospital premises; more personnel expected.
- Security measures include female personnel to protect female staff.
In response to the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has taken decisive action by becoming one of the first institutions in India to implement enhanced armed security measures.
This move follows a seven-day protest by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) in Jammu and across India, demanding improved safety in medical institutions.
The incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered on August 9, sparked widespread outrage and led to strikes by resident doctors.
The protests disrupted elective services, including outpatient departments (OPDs) and non-emergency surgeries, for 11 days. The strike was eventually called off after the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, urged doctors to return to work, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public health infrastructure.
GMC Jammu has confirmed the deployment of 10 to 12 personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) within the hospital premises.
This number is expected to increase as part of a broader strategy to enhance security. Additionally, female security personnel will be deployed to ensure the safety of female doctors and staff.
The administration of GMC Jammu worked closely with police authorities to implement these security measures, which are seen as a significant step towards safeguarding medical professionals. The RDA has committed to ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of these measures.
Authorities are also considering similar security enhancements at other government hospitals in Jammu, reflecting a growing concern for the safety of medical staff in light of recent events.
