Gill and Jaiswals Centuries Impress in Visakhapatnam Test; Sehwag Foresees Decade of Dominance
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have had an outstanding few days in the second Test match against England in Visakhapatnam. Jaiswal’s remarkable maiden double century left fans and experts in awe, while Gill silenced his critics with a gritty century in the second innings. Virender Sehwag, the legendary Indian cricketer, took to social media to applaud both young talents. In his message, Sehwag expressed confidence that these two under-25 players would likely dominate world cricket for the next decade and beyond.
“Glad to see two youngsters, both under 25, rising to the occasion and standing out. Very likely that these two will dominate world cricket for the next decade and more,” Sehwag posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The last instance of two Indian batters under the age of 25 scoring centuries in the same Test match dates back to 1996 when Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly achieved the feat with scores of 177 and 136, respectively, in a Test match against England in Nottingham.
Turning to the ongoing Test match against England, Gill ended India’s seven-year wait for a Test century by a No. 3 batter. His century in Visakhapatnam marked the first time an Indian batter at No. 3 achieved the milestone since Cheteshwar Pujara’s hundred in November 2017 in Nagpur. Jaiswal, on the other hand, became the third youngest Indian to score a double century in Tests, following Vinod Kambli (21 years 32 days) and Sunil Gavaskar (21 years 277 days). Pakistan’s Javed Miandad holds the overall record, achieving this feat at the age of 19 years 140 days.
