Gambhir Favors Single Spinner as India’s XI Sparks Debate for South Africa Series
As the Indian cricket team prepares for a challenging series in South Africa, a nation where they have yet to secure a series victory in the longest format, discussions about the team’s optimal XI are buzzing on social media. Fans are deliberating whether India should opt for two spinners or stick with just one. Particularly in SENA countries, the combination of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja hasn’t been frequently utilized. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir weighed in on the debate, expressing his belief that only one of the two spinners will likely find a place in the starting lineup.
During a discussion on Star Sports, Gambhir shared his chosen XI for the inaugural Test against South Africa. At the opening slots, he favored Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Shubman Gill holding the No. 3 position. Virat Kohli assumed his customary No. 4 spot, while KL Rahul took on the role of the wicket-keeper batter at No. 5.
According to Gambhir, either Jadeja or Ashwin will secure the No. 6 spot, with the remaining positions reserved for four pacers. His preferred pace quartet included Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. Unfortunately, the seasoned Mohammed Shami was unavailable for the series due to injury. Gambhir relegated the emerging all-format pacer Mukesh Kumar to the bench.
