In a video from the protest, one girl broke down while speaking about the absence of their elected leader. She said MLAs from other constituencies had met people from their areas and listened to their grievances, but their own representative was no longer there to hear them. “Our leader has been taken away,” she said, struggling to hold back tears.
The girls spoke of their hopes and aspirations, saying they once dreamed of standing behind Mehraj Malik in the Assembly and raising issues alongside him. Those dreams, they said, now feel shattered. They insisted that Malik is innocent and claimed his only mistake was raising his voice for the poor and marginalised.
Mehraj Malik, a renowned political figure in the region, has been lodged in Kathua Jail after being booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA). The PSA was invoked against him by Doda Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh. Supporters argue that Malik has consistently spoken on what they describe as genuine public issues and believe the action against him is unjustified.
The emotional appeal outside the Assembly highlighted the human impact of the case, with young supporters urging the authorities to show compassion and secure Malik’s release. They said his detention has left them feeling voiceless and disconnected from the democratic process they believed in.
