Dry-Spell Sparks Forest-Fires in Doda Jk, Prompting Concerns for Biodiversity and Urgent Preventive Measures
A prolonged dry spell in the Jammu and Kashmir region has sparked a series of forest fires in the Doda district, particularly affecting the areas of Doda, Bhalesa, and Bhaderwah. This surge in forest fire incidents has raised concerns among environmentalists and local authorities.
Tariq Ahmed, an environmentalist, emphasized the importance of forests as vital sources of biodiversity. He highlighted the devastating impact of forest fires, stating that not only does the dry grass burn, but rare trees and herbs are also destroyed, with the possibility of regrowth being minimal.
Furthermore, Ahmed pointed out the significant toll on wildlife, explaining that during forest fires, many animals, especially smaller ones, birds, their eggs, and insects perish. He underscored that forest fires contribute to a substantial 20 percent of carbon emissions in the atmosphere, playing a role in the depletion of the ozone layer. Without a wet spell, there is a looming threat to the flora and fauna in these forested areas.
In response to the escalating situation, the forest department in Bhaderwah has initiated awareness campaigns in various villages. The aim is to educate people on preventive measures against forest fires in their respective areas. Range officer Chiralla, Bhaderwah, Shephar Iqbal, emphasized the human factor in forest fires, stating that these incidents are not natural but often caused by human actions. He stressed the importance of creating awareness among the local population and providing special training to individuals entering forests, cautioning against careless activities like discarding cigarettes and other materials that can ignite fires.
Iqbal further revealed that efforts have been made to educate residents in small villages on the outskirts of the forest, as some people intentionally set fire to grass to prevent overgrowth, unwittingly causing significant forest fires. As the situation unfolds, the collaborative efforts of environmentalists and local authorities are crucial in mitigating the impact of forest fires in the region.
