Dense Fog Disrupts Flights and Engulfs Delhi-NCR Region
Flight Operations Impacted:
A thick fog enveloped the Delhi-NCR region, leading to significant delays in flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday. Approximately 30 flights, including international ones, faced disruptions in arrivals and departures due to reduced visibility caused by the fog. There are indications that more flights could encounter delays throughout the day, as per the Delhi Airport Flight Information Display System.
Advisory for Passengers:
The Delhi airport issued a passenger advisory, highlighting the potential impact on non-CAT III compliant flights. It urged passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight schedules, as flights not meeting the CAT III compliance might be affected.
City Blanketed in Fog; Health Concerns Raised:
Iconic locations like India Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, AIIMS, Safdarjung, and Anand Vihar depicted a city veiled in dense fog, significantly reducing visibility. This drastic drop in temperature led residents to seek refuge in night shelters. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) satellite images revealed the fog’s extent, spanning across states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Health Warning by IMD:
The IMD warned of potential health impacts due to the dense fog, stating that it contains particulate matter and pollutants. Exposure to such dense fog can lead to lung issues, including wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath, affecting functional lung capacity.
Public Response:
To combat the cold, people were seen gathering around bonfires along roads and lanes. The visibility drop disrupted daily life in areas like Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad and Kanpur, where visibility nearly reached zero, prompting struggles for residents.
The fog-induced disruption not only impacted flight operations but also raised concerns about public health amid the bone-chilling temperatures, prompting necessary precautions and actions to mitigate potential health risks.
