Delhi Opts for Change: Yash Dhull Relieved of Captaincy After Ranji Trophy Opener Defeat; Himmat Singh Takes Charge
Yash Dhull’s captaincy stint for Delhi came to an end on Monday, following the team’s significant loss against Puducherry in the opening match of the Ranji Trophy. Himmat Singh, a seasoned batter, has been appointed as the new captain, leading the team in their upcoming away game against Jammu and Kashmir from January 12. In an effort to rejuvenate Delhi’s struggling performance, Yash Dhull, the U-19 World Cup-winning captain, was appointed as skipper in December 2022. Despite his potential, Dhull’s recent form has been subpar, contributing to the decision to relieve him of captaincy.
Since his debut in February 2022, Dhull has scored 1185 runs with an average of 43.88. However, his recent batting performances, including scores of two and 23 in the loss to Puducherry, led to concerns about his form. The 21-year-old had earlier captained the side in white-ball tournaments earlier in the season.
Rajan Manchanda, the DDCA joint secretary, explained the decision, stating, “Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side.”
Dhull’s struggles against fast bowlers and reluctance to open the innings further contributed to the decision. Himmat Singh, who had previously led Delhi to a significant victory over Mumbai in Dhull’s absence last season, is now entrusted with leading the team. The 27-year-old has played 22 first-class games since his debut in 2017.
Delhi, a team with a rich history of seven Ranji Trophy victories, faces challenges as key players like Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey departed last season. Additionally, senior pacers Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma won’t be part of the team traveling to Jammu, with Ishant only available for home games. Despite these challenges, Delhi, led by Himmat Singh, aims to reclaim the coveted Ranji Trophy, last achieved in the 2007-08 season.
