Delhi-NCR Implements Measures Amid Soaring Air Pollution Levels
In response to the escalating air pollution crisis in Delhi-NCR, the Centre has enforced stringent measures to combat the worsening air quality conditions. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to the surge in the daily average air quality index (AQI).
Key Measures Implemented:
- Ban on Non-Essential Activities: Non-essential construction work, stone crushing, and mining in Delhi-NCR have been prohibited as part of Stage-III GRAP measures.
- Exemptions: Certain essential construction activities related to national security, healthcare, transportation infrastructure, and critical public services are exempt from the ban.
- Vehicle Restrictions: The operation of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in specific areas including Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar has been restricted under Stage-III.
Understanding Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP):
GRAP, designed by the Centre to address air pollution during winters, delineates measures based on the severity of air quality:
- Stage I – ‘Poor’ (AQI 201-300)
- Stage II – ‘Very Poor’ (AQI 301-400)
- Stage III – ‘Severe’ (AQI 401-450)
- Stage IV – ‘Severe Plus’ (AQI>450)
Urgent Action Amid Meteorological Challenges:
Unfavorable weather conditions such as fog, haze, and low wind speed are exacerbating the air quality crisis in Delhi. The sudden spike in the city’s AQI prompted the immediate re-invocation of Stage-III GRAP measures.
These stringent measures aim to curb pollution and safeguard public health, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to address the pressing issue of deteriorating air quality in the region.
